She was born on the old Watkins place on the Chocokoloco Creek near Mardisville, AL. In an article in the Houston Chronicle, she is referred to as Bettie Jemison. It says that her grandfather Major John Watkins settled in 1832 on the old Judge Bowie place on the north side of the Chocokolocco creek near Owen Springs Church. He was a neighbor of Robert Jemison, Issac Kirksey, Judge Groce, and General McClelland.

Eldest of four daughters (Willie was a girl). Their parents were wealthy. Knew Charles Carter as a child, they lived on adjoining plantations. The Jameson family moved to Texas and she wrote back to Charles. They attended Oxford University in Oxford AL, together in 1870. He courted his future wife while he was attending Oxford (AL) college with her in 1870. He wanted to stay in Alabama but she wouldn't marry him unless he came to Texas. He finally gave in and moved to Brenham,TX in 1873 with Judge Wellington Vandiver (an early schoolmate) and was married on 15Jan1874 in Brenham. He wouldn't marry her until he had a job. First job was $25/month. Borrowed the pants he was married in from Rufus Young, Willie Jameson's husband. Willie was the youngest sister. He was the county deputy clerk and wrote his own license.

She was very loving to her children. A story goes that when her husband forced his children to feed his pigs in bad weather in Brenham, TX, she felt sorry for them and choked the pigs to death by feeding them rags in their food.

Cemetery records show that she died of cervical cancer.
