I love how you use the phrase "what my computer knows". I feel that way a lot (and computers are my job). It's as if the computer is in charge and I had better believe what it is telling me even if I can't remember why it would be saying that.

My family "history" tells a different story. There was, on a farm somewhere in South Carolina, a Mr. and Mrs. Runnels. They had at least 3 children, an older boy, a girl, and the baby, Dudley. Something happened between Mr. Runnels and the local indians. One day when he and the older boy were out in the fields the indians came. Both were killed. Mrs. Runnels managed to get away on a "half-broken colt" that was tied up outside the door. She and both of the little children made it into town safely. This was not an indian masaccre(sp?) and rampage. It was somehow a personal thing between Mr. Runnels and the indians.

Not long after, Mrs. Runnels (thought to be Elizabeth or Mary) married a Mr. Whitlock who adopted Dudley Runnels. His name then became Dudley Runnels Whitlock. Where the little girl fits into this is not known.

I have checked my information in my "Whitlock Book". I have Dudley Runnels Whitlock born in December 1821 in South Carolina. He died 1899/1900 at the age of 78 in Whitefield , Indian Territory (Oklahoma).

I have a copy of an application for Royal Highlanders Insurance for a policy on my great-great uncle, Ridge "Butch" Whitlock that was filled out May 19, 1908. Ridge Whitlock was the second son of Ross Whitlock (3rd child of DRW). He (Ridge) was born 27 August, 1878 in Ardmore, Indian Territory (Oklahoma). On this application he states that his father's father (DRW) died at the age of 78, suffering from a paralysis of 2 weeks. His previous health had been good. His father's mother (Mary Wilkins) had died at the age of 35 of "no specific cause". I will have to ask my aunt but I believe she said that Uncle Butch said (3rd or 4th hand I know) that Dudley Runnels Whitlock was living with them when he died.

I have heard several people say that the Whitlock-Marion connection just does not work. I have also heard several people swear that it is gospel. No one seems to be able to prove anything, just a lot of speculation.

As I have never been looking for Lott Whitlock, I know next to nothing about him or his family. I will keep my eyes open and let you know if I find anything. Peter Whitlock's resources are vast. He would be my starting point.

I am glad to see that Peter finally has an e-mail address. Several of my relatives have written to him in the past and a few have done special projects for him.

Please let me know if you come across anything. I will do the same. Any of my information is yours for the asking. I will contact Peter Whitlock and see what he has to say about all of this.

Just a thought - perhaps there was a Dudley REYNOLDS Whitlock in the family of Lott Whitlock. Perhaps my Dudley RUNNELS Whitlock is just a strange coinsidence - born in the same era/area, living in the same area. Who knows? Maybe they were cousins or something. People could be right - maybe they are the same person.

Very little is known about Mayflower passenger William White. For many years, it was thought he married Susanna Fuller, sister of Samuel Fuller. This is because of this Leyden record (summarized):

27 January 1612 Betrothal of William White, woolcomber, bachelor from England, to Ann Fuller spinster from England; Sarah Priest and Samuel Fuller witnesses.

Here we have a William White from England marrying into the Fuller family--with witnesses Samuel Fuller, a Mayflower passenger, and Sarah Priest, wife of Degory Priest another Mayflower passenger. How could this not be William White of the Mayflower? That is what researchers thought for many years, until this record was found (summarized):

25 October 1621 William White witnessed the betrothal of Godbert Godbertson to Sarah (Allerton)(Vincent) Priest, widow of Digory Priest.

William White of the Mayflower was dead in New England in October, 1621 so could not have witnessed Sarah Priest's marriage. This means there was another William White, who married Ann Fuller--and he was not the same as the William White and Susanna who came on the Mayflower. Also note that Ann Fuller was born in 1576/7. William White of the Mayflower's widow Susanna married second in Plymouth, Edward Winslow. If Susanna was the same as Ann, she would have been 18 years younger than her husband--very unlikely.

So in conclusion, the maiden name of William White's wife Susanna remains unknown, but it definitely was not Fuller.

The ancestry of William White of the Mayflower is not known. Incorrect royal lineages have been given for him, as well as an incorrect identification of him as the son of Rev. John White of London.

Peregrine White's cradle is preserved in the Plymouth Hall Museum, and a picture of it can be seen on their web page.
