Hi Hank, I found your Chandlers in a book I have ("Our Joseph Chandler of Caswell Co., N.C." by Ilene Chandler Miller). The line of descent shown in this
book is:
1st generation - John Chandler, b. abt 1599 in England, came to America 1609 on ship "Hercules", m. 1st unknown, 2nd Elizabeth____, b. abt 1603 in England.
2nd generation - Robert Chandler, b. abt 1628, d. 12 Apr 1669 York Co., VA, m. Elizabeth Davis?, b. abt 1634
3rd generation - Robert Chandler, b. abt. 1659 in VA, d. aft. 1704 New Kent Co., VA, m. Elizabeth ____, b. abt. 1664 in VA

Our last common relative is the 4th generation Joseph. This information comes from "John Chandler Descendent Chart Book 1599 to Present", published last fall, I think by the Chandler Family Ass'n. You might be interested in it. They put out periodic newsletters.

Land tax records indicate that such a man owned land in Albemarle County from 1803 until after 1808.
I looked for and failed to find any military service record.
The "Dear Nell" letter says that he lived in Albemarle County.
VA Land records indicate that:
1) Daniel Chandler of Albemarle County bought land on both sides of the south fork of Fishing Creek on 13Jun1755, that he had come from Nothumberland County on 6Jan1668 and that he was the son of John Chandler. This could be Richard's father.
2) Richard Chandler bought land on Peter's Creek in Patrick County, VA on 24Mar1804.
3) Richard C. Chandler bought land on big Hurricane Creek in Kanawha County, VA on 20Oct1837.
There is a record of a John A. Chandler who's will was probated in James City Co, VA on 4Apr1778.
