It is possible that he had an affair with a mystery woman in about 1715 (his age was 25) before being sent away to England and had the son John mentioned in his father's will? He was sent to England by his father for his education. He was educated in Law at the Middle Temple finishing in 1720. He was made Secretary of the colony in 1721 and used this title. First obtained a grant of 9350 acres called Carter's Mountain in 1730. He never lived in Albemarle County, but maintained two establishments there, The Mill on the west side of the mountain and Clear Mount (Redlands? or Blenheim?) on the east. He died in 1743 of dropsy. At this time, his eldest son Charles succeeded to his patrimonial estate in Lancaster County and his son Edward to his estates in Albemarle County. There is little record of his older son John, perhaps he was illegitimate?
