Notes

He was born in Bertie County, NC and was raised in Barnswell District, SC, where his father settled after the Revolutionary War. Barnswell District was in the low country between Augusta and Charlestown, NC. The Daughdrill land was on the Indian Branch and Back-Swamp-Waters of the Savannah River, known as "Cracker's Neck." The family changed the spelling of their name to Daughdrill sometime between the end of the War and 1807.

In 1808 he and his brother James left for a tract of land in Tennessee on the "Big Bend" of the Tennessee River, in Humphreys County, about 40 miles west of Nashville at Cuba Landing. To make the trip they followed Indian trails through the Alabama Territory. Due to hostile Indians they were forced to abandon the trip.

They settled near old Fort Mims in the Alabama Territory. Rumors of an attack by the Creek Indians, which eventually culminated in the massacre at Fort Mims, caused the Daughdrill brothers to move on to the Mississippi Territory. They settled about 1811 in what is now Greene County, MS, about 40 miles northwest of Mobile, AL. John was listed in the 1840 census in Greene County with age over 45.

They enlisted in the War of 1812 and fought with General Jackson at New Orleans, serving in Colonel Nixson's regiment of Mississippi Militia. After the War they built a thriving business in turpentine and lumber, taking advantage of transportation on the Leaf and Pascagoula Rivers.

John "Jackie" Daughdrill returned to Barnwell District, SC and married his cousin Winnie Harrell daughter of Zachariah Harrell. She was a native of South Carolina born in 1790. They moved to Greene County, MS on 11Feb1811. The brothers became involved in turpentine and lumber. Also they did some farming and cattle raising.
