Notes

Inhereted the estates in Albemarle County in 1742 when his Father died, and built Blenheim. He lived in Fredericksberg 1770-1781 and a few years after 1788, otherwise he spent much of his time at Blenheim in later life. He represented the county in the House of Burgesses from 1767-1769, and the House of Delegates 1788. He had 13 children.

In 1946 Blenheim was 100 feet long with a 35 foot L. It stood almost at the center of a 5 acre lawn with immense trees and commanded wonderfully fine views of mountains on the west and the rolling country on the east. The library, kitchen and servants quarters occupy quaint and separate buildings.

According to his will. The executors bond date was 6Jun1792. Witnesses: Charles Carter , Jr., Charles Carter, George Carter, George Gillman, Executor: sons Charles and Edward Carter and Edward Champe. Heirs: wife Sally Carter, the house and lots in Fredericksburg, plantation and house in Albemarle (known as Blenheim), tract of land purchased of Col. Champe, late of Culpeper, during her widowhood; sons Charles and Edward, land in Amherst Co. near where my son John lives: son John and his wife Apphire Carter; son Charles and his wife the daughter of Col. Fielding Lewis; son George, land in Amherst Co.; sons Whitacre and Hill, land in Amherst Co.; son William Champe Carter, plantations called "Dicks" and "Wheelers" and land in Albemarle Co. son Robert Carter, plantations in Albemarle known by the name of "Gloucester" and "Chathams"; daughters Mary Champe and Ann Williams; daughters Elizabeth Stannard; daughter Jane Bradford, wife of Maj. Samuel K. Bradford, and their children; daughter Sally Carter, wife of George Carter.

Blenheim was purchased by Andrew Stevenson in 1836.
