He moved from Greene County, MS to Mobile , AL and accumulated considerable wealth. In the 1850 census he had real estate valued at $7,000, a considerable sum at a time when a small farm was valued at $400 to $500. He owned a great deal of land in Mobile, including MonLouis Island (now called Dauphin Island), and had a large interests in iron ore foundries (i.e. he owned Pound Mountain Iron Works) in north Alabama, near Gadsden.

John Hunt was his business partner before the Civil War. He also had a shipping business on the Alabama and Warrior Rivers. The census of 1860 listed him as 46 years old, his occupation as "Gentleman," and he was the wealthiest citizen in Mobile. His real property was valued at $75,000 and his personal property at $40,000.

He lost much of his property to the "cause." He moved to Gadsden, AL, and became Clerk of Court.

Writing in 1952, Robert A. Lacey of Mobile recorded, " Even today there is property in his name recorded in the books at Mobile, AL held by others; title to which has never been cleared."

After his first wife's death, he married again, late in life, to his housekeeper, Harriet Hallie. She was at least 35 years younger and already had two sons, Claude and Steve. Several of James Daughdrill's children heard that she had destroyed James' will after he died so that she and her sons inherited the remaining fortune that he still held in real estate.
