According to Donald M. Howard, a Tapscott ancester, Henry Tapscott came from England to the Northumberland area in 1696. His grandson, George, got a revolutionary war land grant in Buckingham Co. by 1784, and he married Sally Hill, probably in Lancaster, Co. where James Tapscott and Martha were married in 1798. By 1800 James was in Buckingham with land. The family parcel was on Rock Creek, near Warren's Ferry. James was apparently in the War if 1812 and in 1813 my great-great grandfather, James M. was born. He married Sarah Turner. His son, Nicholas Tapscott, was my great grandfather, in Co. K, 4th Va. Cavalry, Civil War.
According to Mr. Morris, Dr. George Nicholas patented 2600 acres of land in the vicinity of (what is now) Warren, VA sometime in the early 1700s. He thinks that Wilson Cary Nicholas was Dr. Nicholas' grandson and that he inherited this land and lived at (what is now called) Donegal Farm. He laid out Warren as a town in 1794. This information is on pages 289-290 of Albemarle County of Virginia by Edgar Wood. Governor Nicholas died at Tufton Farm (owned by his daughter's husband Col. T. J. Randolph) near Monticello in 1820.
A Mr. Morgan, visiting from England, was living at Mt. Warren Farm, owned by Mr. Alexander, in Warren. While they were out for a ride in about 1890, they were accosted by John Coles, who shot Mr. Morgan dead. Many of the people in Warren disliked John Coles because he had married a Negro woman. Even his own family living near Keebe, VA did not claim him as a relative. The Tapscotts bought their property from the estate of John Coles using money provided by a wealthy relative , Mrs. Zemp of New York (who is the great aunt to the Mr. Harvey Tapscott, now living in Warren), in about 1890.
