He was only 11 when his father died and 15 when his Grandmother Wheeler died. Her Grandmother split her half of the $8000 Wheeler estate between Fannie and Ben. This might have been out of concern for the two fatherless children. Her Will was changed just six days before she died. This caused a lawsuit between Edwin Abbott and the Wheeler estate. He was said to have been very bad tempered and to have dominated his wife and ultimately alienated his son and namesake, who left and didn't return even to inherit his estate.

So, the family had some money when Ben was first married. My mother told me that they considered buying some bay front property but a big hurricane came through and tore up the neighborhood just before they closed on the property so they didn't take it. A partner in his business ran off with all of the money. He was very sickly in his middle and late years with rheumatism. I remember him sitting in an ornately carved Victorian (like one that I now own) chair with large knobs all over his hands. He was a very kindly man and his wife always took good care of him. My Mother told me that they lived in Marlin, TX when she was in high school so that her father could enjoy the hot baths there.
