Notes

This isn't a second husband, but another widely held opinion as to who John Carter was, propagated by William Carter of Roanoke, VA who was a descendent of Bernard Carter through another of his sons. I don't know what his proof was because he died before I could talk to him, but all that he seems to say about John seemed to come from the Fluvanna marriage records of John to Mourning. His exact marriage date agrees with mine. I don't know if he had some other reason to connect John to Bernard other than temporal and spatial proximity. He sometimes gave 1770 as John's approximate birth date, possibly to make him about the typical marriage age when he Married Mourning. However, this would have made him much too, young to have fought in the Revolution. Both his Son and his widow claimed (under oath) in her pension application that he did fight then.

The other John is my best guess from sparse family data as well as circumstantial evidence, as discussed in the notes in the other John. I don't think anyone really knows, yet, who John was for sure.
