INDEX
Notes
Reared in Rochester, NY and apprenticed as a machinist. In 1858 (21
years old) he came to Texas to work for James A. Cushman.
Accompanying Cushman to Houston he worked for him until the beginning
of the Civil War. He then enlisted in Company A, Fifth Texas Infantry,
Hood's Brigade. He fought with his unit up to Gettysburg where on
2Jul1864 he was captured. He was held at Ft. Delaware some months,
escaped, and made his way to New York City, walking most of the way.
With the aid of a Mr. Eddy, whose brother he had known in the service, he
got to Rochester. He survived for a few months on a forged furlough and,
when he was found out, he escaped to Canada, where he worked as a
stationary engineer, refitting Confederate gunboats. From Canada he
went to Havana, Cuba, where he assisted is repairing gunboats to be used
as blockade runners. Finally he took passage back to Texas, intending to
re-enlist. He was delayed because his boat was wrecked at the mouth of
the Brazos River. A short time after he got back home, Lee surrendered.
The same year, he went into partnership with Dan C. Smith and C. C.
Wiggin in the Phoenix Iron Works in Houston. In 1874 Smith sold his
interests to Simpson and Wiggin. The business failed after a few years.
He began a new business under the name Simpson, Hartwell, and Stopple.
He joined the Mason's in 1871, becoming a member of Holland Lodge #1. I
found real estate tax records for a Hollingworth track of land in Houston
from 1879 to 1885.
I have a letter freeing him to his family after he was captured. Came to
Houston from Rochester, NY. They are related to the Benedict family
there.
At the battle of Bull Run Benjamin Charles Simpson II saved Green
Berry Mitchell's life and wouldn't let the surgeons saw off his leg.
