Notes

I located a history of Alameda County that is contemporary with Annie Alves, using the internet, and got a copy through interlibrary loan from UNC at Wilmington. It is M. W. Wood, History of Alameda County, California (Holmes Book Co., Oakland, 1883). I also found a somewhat more modern book: Joseph E. Baker. Past and Present of Alameda County, CA(S. J. Clarke Pub, Chicago, 1914). Here are some interesting dates and facts from these books:

1767-The property of the Jesuits was taken by the Government (Pious Fund) to finance the Missions.

1776-Louis Maria Peralta arrives at the Presidio in San Francisco 1805-The Spanish Government took part of the Pious Fund to finance wars with England & Portugal.

1813-Spain secularized the Missions to get part of their money to finance their conflict with Mexico.

1816-Russians established a short lived settlement.

18Aug1820-Rancho San Antonio granted to Louis Maria Peralta (born in Jubec, Sonora) by Spanish Government. It extended 5 leagues along the eastern shore of the Bay from San Leandro Creek to the northwestern line of Alameda County. This included Alameda, Oakland, Berkeley, and extended back to the hills. Temescal was used as the name of the part of the rancho which later became Oakland. He married Maria Lolereto Alviso and had five sons (Ygnacio, Jose Domingo, Antonio Maria, Vicente, and a child that died) and five daughters (Teodora, Trinidad, Josefa, Guadalupe, and Maria Louisa). The father never lived in Alameda county but spent his time on another rancho in Contra Costa county. A fine family mansion was built near the foothills of the Contra Costa range on San Leandro Creek, and was occupied in common by the sons until 1842, when the rancho was divided equally among the sons by lines running from the bay eastward. Jose Domindo got the northernmost where Berkeley now stands, Vicente got the next to the south where Oakland is, Antonio Maria the next to the south where east Oakland and Alameda now are (the Encinal de Temescal), and Ygnacio got the most southerly on which stood the old homestead. All of this was occupied alone by the Peralta family for a long period of years where they raised large herds of cattle and horses, and raised grain and fruit.

18May1822-Mexico became independent of Spain but this had no effect in California.

1834-1842-Catholic Missions declined due to Mexican plunder of their property.

1835-Vicente Peralta sells a tract of land to John Carr for Oakland.

1842-1848-Peralta family sole residents of Alameda about 30 families in San Francisco.

Aug1843-Peralto divided his lands among his sons, Antonio Maria Peralta got East Oakland & Alameda.

1846-John Marsh said that California had 7000 Mexicans, 10,000 civilized Indians, 700 Americans, 100 English, and 50 other European people, in addition there were immense numbers of wild Indians.

13May1846-War declared between US and Mexico.

14Jun1846-General Vallejo & Sonoma Captured, and California proclaimed independent of Mexico.

7Jul1846 Monterey taken by Scott.

8Jan1847-Mexico surrenders.

1847-the village of Yerba Buena renamed San Francisco.

1846-1849-California under US military rule.

1Sep1849-Constitutional convention & afterward elections held.

1849-beginning of Gold rush.

9Sep1850-California became a State.

1850-1855-Large numbers of squatters moved onto the Ranchos claiming that it was all U. S. Government land. This was true in what was soon to become Oakland. In Oakland they organized legal resistance to official eviction and even purchased a cannon to warn everyone in case of attempted forced eviction. By 1852 there were about 50 squatters in tents and shanties each holding 160 acres as homesteaders. There were no regular ferries to San Francisco until later.

1851-Louis Maria Peralta dies (93) and leaves his Ranchos to his sons.

Oct1851-Antonio M. Peralta, at his home Fruit Vale, sells Alameda Township to Auginbaugh for $14,000.

1852-Town of Oakland incorporated.

1Aug1853-Vicente Peralta sells the remainder of his land for $10k excepting the "Vicente Peralta Reserve", a 700 acre tract about two miles from Oakland on either side of Telegraph Road which he kept as a homestead.

1868-69-A series of dams were built backing up the eastern branch of Temescal creek to form Lake Chabot. Lake Chabot was about 400 feet wide and 3/4 mile long. Until 1Jun1872 all of the water used in Oakland came from below lake Chabot and from Fruitvale.

21Oct1868-earthquake which damaged most interior and valley towns but just broke glass in Oakland.

1870-Alameda county population, according to census was 25,737.

25Jun1874-Antonio Maria Peralta granted Patent on 15,206.59 acres of Rancho San Antonio by US.

1870-1880-a depression caused widespread unemployment.

1870-population of Oakland about 10,500.

1872-Oakland had developed into a city.

1874-Ygnacio Peralta (the oldest brother) died at his home Alta Mira (now a Club) in San Leandro, CA.

1875-By now the property values in Oakland were escalating out of sight.

1877- only Antonio Maria (living in Fruitvale) and Guadalupe (living in Santa Clara) were still living among Louis Peralta's children (L. J. Freeman, Alameda County Past & Present( San Leandro Reporter, San Leandro, CA, 1946), p.37).

1878-Population of Oakland >35,000.

1880-California began large scale fruit growing.

1880-1890-population explosion in San Francisco which carried over to Alameda County.

31Dec1882-three inches of snow fell with temperatures of 18 degrees(Annie was 7yrs).

Aug1884-The Strowbridge sale of the "Garden of the Eden", near Haywood for $93,000 in 29 tracts of 10 to 100 acres.

14Aug1885-The salt makers of Alameda County met at Mt. Eden. June1885-School census of students (7 to 17 yrs) gave Alameda 1841, Berkeley 879, Bay 272, Centerville 194, Fruitvale 234, Laurel 535, Livermore 597, Oakland 10,115, Pleasanton 246, San Lorenzo 285, Temescal 401, Union 679 (Annie was 10 yrs).

Feb1889-An item in the Alamedia County Board proceeding stated that more than half of the many indigents of both sexes that the county had to care for were Portuguese and that this constituted one of the Counties largest expenses. Joaquin Miller offered land for a new pest house because no one else wanted it near them. He said "if here in the shadow of forty church spires respectable people can burn down a pest tent, what can be expected of ignorant, simple Portuguese kelp and driftwood thrown up on the Azores".

Jun-Jul1893-a serious epidemic of diphtheria extended out from Oakland all the way to Hayward(Annie was 18yrs).

18Apr1906-at 5:13AM the San Francisco earthquake hit 18,000 to 50,000 refuges fled to in Oakland.

1936-Bay bridge completed.
