Notes

The earliest records located on the Dodrill family, those of James Dodrill and his sons, John and James, are on file in the Department of Archives of the Historical Commission in the state of North Carolina. James Dodrill and his son John Dodrill were shown on the tax list in Bertie County, NC in 1771 where they resided and paid taxes. James Dodriel's name (note misspelling) appears on a list of tithers in 1772 and he was taxed with two polls ( males over the age 16) and two slaves. In 1774 James Dodrill, John Dodrill, and by that time the younger son, James Dodrill, all were listed on the tax lists as heads of households. James Dodrill also appears on the tax list for 1776 along with John Dodrill, who was taxes with three Negro slaves and one wench. In 1777 John Dodrill is listed as an overseer and paid tax for one white poll and four black polls. Bertie County is in the northeastern part of North Carolina. This is sand hill country with streams that flow into the Roanoke River, the southern boundary of the County. The Roanoke River flows east about 30 miles to Bachelor Bay, part of Albemarle Sound, the salt water area that includes Roanoke Island, Nags Head, and Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. When James Dodrill Sr. died, his entire estate proceedings was filed in North Carolina on Aug. 13, 1777. John Dodrill was named as administrator of his father's estate. John Dodrill, James Dodrill and Obed Roundtree were named as bondsmen. The record of the inventory of personal property in the estate has been preserved and is on file. Enlisted in the Continental Army on July 20, 1778 under Colonel Abraham Shepard as a private in the 10th regiment (volume 16, page 1046 of the North Carolina state records). A few days after his enlistment he conveyed his whole estate to his brother John on 2Jun1778 (Bertie County, NC Book M., page 368). He is listed on the roster of solders from North Carolina in the American Revolution, published by the North Carolina DAR. He was married on or about 3Jun1778 but no record is known. After the War he settled in Barnwell District of SC where he and his wife eventually died.
